Evelyn Gene Cornwall (Lyn St. James) was born on March 13, 1947 in Willoughby, Ohio to Alfred and Maxine Cornwall. Lyn attended the Andrews School for Girls and earned a piano teaching certificate. She married John Carusso, a Florida businessman, at the age of 23 and the couple pursued their love of racing while participating in the Sports Car Club of America racing events. Lyn and John both raced their own cars and Lyn was named the SSCA Florida regional champion in 1976 and again in 1977. Lyn graduated to the ISMA Camel GT series where she was crowned rookie of the year in 1985 after winning at Elkart Lake Wisconsin.

Lyn changed her name in order to establish her own identify in the racing world. She took her name from a popular television star, Susan Saint James, who played in the popular television series McMillian and Wife. Lyn started her first Indianapolis 500 Mile race in 1992 where she finished 11th. She was the first woman to be crowned rookie of the year in the Indy Car Series. Lyn raced in 7 consecutive races between 1992 and 1998 and she is the third woman to have ever raced in the Indianapolis 500. She is a co-founder and minority owner of Human Performance International, Inc. based in Daytona, Florida. The organization is devoted to personal development programs for optimizing competitive performance. Lyn spends a good deal of her time these days as a motivational speaker to groups around the country.
