Janet Guthrie was the first woman to ever qualify and compete in the Indianapolis 500. She was a rookie driver in 1977 where she finished 29th after suffering engine trouble that forced her out of the race. She finished 11th at Indy in 1978. She qualified for and raced in the Indianapolis 500 for five consecutive years. In 1976 she became the first woman to have ever qualified for and raced in a NASCAR Winston Cup super speedway race and the first woman to have ever raced in the Daytona 500. Born March 7, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa, Janet graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Michigan. She worked as an aerospace engineer before she began pursuing her interest in auto racing. Janet’s helmet and driver’s suit is now part of the Smithsonian’s exhibits.
