rssCAMPING OPTIONS FOR THE INDIANAPOLIS 500

Primitive camping is available at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for fans attending the Indianapolis 500. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has designated camping lots where campers may camp over the four day race weekend. Race fans may camp in tents, campers or self-contained recreational vehicles (RVs). Here’s how it works:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located in the town of Speedway, Indiana, which is an incorporated city located approximately 5 miles from the center of downtown Indianapolis. The area immediately surrounding the track is mixed residential and commercial. The designated camping areas are located along the north, west and south ends of the track. There are a number of designated camping areas that include grassy fields as well as gravel and paved parking lots. Your camping site will look more like a parking lot than a camp ground, but you will be within a few hundred yards of the track itself. Many race fans enjoy this option because it provides them with an opportunity to be close to their seats and socialize with other race fans. The atmosphere in the camping lots is typically very festive. Tailgating is permitted. Portable toilet facilities are placed in close proximity to the camping areas.
TWO AND FOUR DAY CAMPING PASS: Campers camping in tents may obtain a 2 or 4 day camping pass. RV/pull behind campers must purchase a 4 day camping pass. It is also possible to purchase a one day camping pass, but availability may be extremely limited. All campers must be off the grounds by noon on Monday following the race.
HOOK UPS: There are none. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway does not provide any hook ups for campers. However, for campers who camp in Lot #3 pavement only, IMS offers a special Generator Pass for $150.00. The Generator Pass entitles the pass holder to use a 30 amp generator over the four day camping pass period. You must purchase a camping pass along with the Generator Pass.
DESIGNATED CAMPING LOTS: Study the camping options below to determine which option best suits your needs and then call the IMS ticket office at 1-800-822-4639 to secure your pass over the phone. You can also purchase your pass directly by stopping by the IMS ticket office located at 4790 W. 16th Street, Speedway, Indiana (located just outside of Gate #1, 16th Street and Georgetown Rd.)

OTHER CAMPING OPTIONS- There are a few campgrounds around Indianapolis but none that are in close proximity to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, adjacent to the track on the northwest corner of 16th and Georgtown Road you will find the Wilcox Mobile Home Park. They have a few camping spots available complete with electric, water and sewer hookup. As you might guess, most of these “camp sites” are reserved year after year leaving very few available for the race. If you are interested in securing one of them, you can contact them at 317-248-1311. You can also call Indy Lakes Campground at 317-888-6006 or Lake Haven Retreat Campground at 317-783-5267. Indian Lakes Campground also has a Lodge Cabin if you want to enjoy a forest retreat when you are not at the track. At the time of this posting, INDY500GUIDE.COM has not visited either of these campgrounds and have no other information to offer. We will attempt to visit these locations and update our information in the near future.
